Below I have put together a survey on MPs' salaries and expenses. I would be very grateful if you could take the time to complete the survey so I can hear your views.

British MPs are currently paid a basic salary of £64,000 a year. This is a bit more than MPs in Australia, France and Germany; a bit less than MPs in Canada, Italy and the Netherlands and much less than in the United States (where constituencies are much bigger as well.)

Senior civil servants are paid between £57,000 and £100,000 a year. A head teacher can earn up to £100,000. A chief superintendent of police earns from £72,000 - £76,000

1) Do you think the current salary for MPs is:

2) Would you support a system of Citizens’ Juries (with members of the public selected from the voting register) to decide on MPs’ salaries and expenses?

MPs can also claim up to £126,000 a year to run their constituency office (including employing staff, rent, telephone etc.) and a further £10,000 for communications (postage etc). (I claim the full amount to cover the costs of my office at 5 Frog Island, Leicester)

3) Do you think MPs should be able to claim an allowance for their constituency office?

4) In Australia, Parliament rents an office in each constituency for the MP to use. Do you think this would be a better system, rather than paying an allowance to the MP and leaving them to make their own arrangements?

5) Have you ever contacted my constituency office seeking help or advice?

MPs can also claim up to £24,000 a year for a second home. If the MP’s main home is in the constituency, they can buy or rent a property in London. If the MP’s main home is in London, they can buy or rent a property in their constituency. (Because my husband and I have our main home in London, I claim about £13,000 a year for my home in Leicester.)

6) Do you think it is right that MPs should be able to claim an allowance for the costs of a second home?

7) Do you think it would be better if Parliament provided small flats in London for MPs to use when they are working at the House of Commons (and did the same for MPs needing a second home in their constituency)?

Many thanks for your time in completing the survey.
